Six sections, in the order they happen
Every entry on this site belongs to one of these. If you would rather see all twenty-eight at once, the archive lists them in a single register.
Pruning
January–March · 5 entriesChoosing next year's wood in the cold. Pruning is the only job in the year that is done entirely on last season's wood, in the cold, months before anything is green.
Bud Break
April–May · 5 entriesThe weeks when one night can take the crop. Once the buds swell there is nothing between the shoot and the air.
Green Work
June–July · 5 entriesEverything done to the canopy before the fruit matters. Everything done between flowering and colour is done to the canopy: which shoots stay, how much leaf sits over the fruit, how tall the row is allowed to run.
Veraison
August · 4 entriesThe week the fruit changes. Softening, colour and sugar all begin within a few days of each other.
Harvest
September–October · 4 entriesDeciding when, and picking against the weather. The pick is rarely called on perfect ripeness.
The Freeze
November–January · 5 entriesWhat is left hanging, and the wait. What is left on the wire in November is netted, watched and left alone.
