Sipos: 2004 GRAPE KING

(Chair Debbie Zimmerman, on behalf of the Grape
Growers of Ontario) -- I am pleased to announce that the
grower of the year is Ms. Livia Sipos of Crown Bench Estates Winery.
Ms. Sipos is a member of a long line of proud farmers, having
farmed fruit, vineyards and poultry in the Niagara Peninsula
for over forty years.
She is a graduate from Rittenhouse Public School (Vineland
Station), Beamsville District Secondary School (Beamsville),
and Centennial College (Toronto). Livia worked for a large advertising
agency but left to raise a family.
Nine years ago, with husband Peter Kocsis, she decided to purchase
one of the oldest planted vineyards on the Beamsville Bench.
It took five years of hard work to get the vineyard into shape.
At the same time, she established a small boutique winery.
In order to produce premium wines their vineyards are pruned
to produce about two tons to the acre, the vines undergo shoot
positioning and leaf plucking and hedging for better grape production
takes place. To produce good wines, you must start with good
grapes. Livia Sipos and Peter Kocsis have created a winery on
one of the most scenic locations, with a vineyard that produces
world class grapes and wines.
Crown Bench Estates Winery now produces some of the finest
wines in the world, having garnered International Gold and Silver
medals as well as local recognition. In addition to their premium
wines they have also innovated Gold Medal winning products that
are not found at any other winery.
Farming is more than just a job for the 2004 Grape King, it’s
an art and a privilege that she takes very seriously. Congratulations
Livia!
